Who Is Mixt Ape?

Mixt Ape is a mysterious and transient spiritual being channeled through the keen fingers of Callum McLean. Some say his mother was impregnated by an 8-track recorder, and he speaks only in the key of F minor. Some say that all monkeys are based on Mixt Ape. Some say that if you seclude yourself in the wilderness and listen very hard, you can hear Mixt Ape caressing your eardrums. Some say that music was an accidental occurrence resulting from that time when Mixt Ape had bad gas. Some say that Mixt Ape is actually a clever rearrangement of the word mix-tape, connoting elements of musical selection and knowledge with, err, monkeys.

To Fans:

In following my musical gospel, I'm assuming that you all use this blog as a filter, as a guide to a wider musical world, and that in making use of the downloads provided, you have the musical and ethical integrity to then support the artists blogged about. File sharing is only good for the music industry by providing consumers with the means to be more selective in their subsequent purchases. You like something I've posted? Great, buy the track, buy the whole album, go to the shows. Listen to Stephen Fry's take on the matter.

The Mixt Ape Rift

I understand that there may well be a divide in taste across many of my readership. It's that initial clash between one predominate field and the other: the acoustic/indie/pop/alternative and, essentially, dnb/dub/electronica. A perceived chasm between the blog-hyped, psychedelic, standard-instrumental and the dancefloor-friendly, bass-heavy, mechanical.

Mixt Ape has no problem posting these alongside each other. Some music may be inoffensively charming, psychedelic and epic or heartwarming and emotive, but that still leaves room for music that's industrial and technological, that's a sledgehammer to the ears and a catalyst for the feet, or lies in the skill of production and smoothness of mix. If a lot of the music I post here seems to be more about digital craftsmanship and who-can-produce-the-heaviest-drop, that doesn't necessarily make it inferior to music with more obvious artistic intent. Perhaps one day I'll wake up and realise that the sonic sledgehammer blows of more instantly-gratifying dance music have lost their charm through the ebb and flow of time, but until that point, I'll be posting shudder-inspiring loud music on the same shelf as your folk and krautrock. Deal with it.
